There’s something sacred about the early morning, the quiet before the world wakes up, the softness of a fresh start, the stillness where God’s voice feels just a little louder. Over the years, my morning routine has shifted from productivity to presence. It’s become the place where my heart settles, my mind clears, and my day begins with intentionality rather than rushing.
If you’ve been desiring a morning rhythm that draws you closer to the Lord, brings peace to your thoughts, and helps you lead your business with clarity, I pray this behind-the-scenes look at my cozy journaling routine blesses you and maybe even inspires your own.
Why I Start My Mornings Slowly and With the Lord
Why I Start My Mornings Slowly and With the Lord
There was a time when I woke up already feeling as if I were behind - scrolling before Scripture, thinking about tasks that needed to be done, letting urgency take the lead instead of checking in with the Lord. My days felt scattered, my emotions felt frazzled, and my leadership felt drained.
Shifting to a slow, faith-centered morning wasn’t about adding more to my plate; it was about giving God the first moments of my day so the rest of it could flow from overflow instead of feeling empty. Little by little, that routine has become one of the sweetest parts of my day.

If you’ve been craving a slower, more intentional way to start your mornings with God, but aren’t quite sure what that looks like for you, I created a free guide called Creating Your Morning Routine.
It walks you through choosing a rhythm that actually fits your season, your energy, and your life, without pressure to copy someone else’s routine. It’s simple, reflective, and rooted in faith, meant to help you build a morning that feels peaceful, purposeful, and sustainable.
If you’re curious what this looks like in real life, here’s what my own morning time with God looks like right now.

1. A Daily Devotional That Grounds My Heart
Right now, I’m slowly working through Emmanuel: An Invitation to Prepare Him Room at Christmas and Always by Ruth Chou Simons, and it has been such a steady, grounding place to begin my mornings. Her words help me pause before the day takes over and gently redirect my focus back to the Lord. Instead of jumping straight into responsibilities or distractions, the devotional gives my heart a soft landing and a reminder of what truly matters.
For me, a devotional isn’t about finishing a page or checking a box. It’s simply a starting point that helps me shift my attention away from what needs to be done and back to Christ. Even a few quiet minutes can set a completely different tone for the day.
2. Reading a Chapter of Scripture
2. Reading a Chapter of Scripture
After my devotional, I open my Bible and read a chapter or two, moving slowly and without pressure. Right now, I’m reading through the book of Matthew, and some mornings I linger over a single verse while other mornings I read the passage straight through. I often pause to ask simple questions like, “Lord, what are You showing me here?” or “What do You want me to notice today?”
This isn’t about speed or volume. It’s about staying with God’s Word long enough for it to settle into your thoughts. If reading the Bible has ever felt overwhelming, try choosing one book and walking through it over time, paying attention to what stands out rather than how quickly you finish. The clarity comes in the staying, not the rushing.
3. Gratitude Journaling & Prayer Journaling
This part of my morning is less about structure and more about slowing down enough to check in with God. Some days I write a full page. Other days, it’s only a few lines. I’ve learned that the amount doesn’t matter nearly as much as the habit of showing up.
Most mornings, my journaling follows a simple rhythm. I start by writing down a few things I’m thankful for, then I name whatever has been sitting heavy on my heart. From there, I write a prayer, offering those thoughts back to God, and I usually end by writing what I’m trusting Him with for the day ahead.
This practice has quietly shaped my faith over time. It’s given me a place to think clearly, pray honestly, and release what I don’t need to carry into the rest of the day. If journaling has ever felt intimidating or unnecessary, let this be your permission to keep it simple. You don’t need a perfect system, just a few intentional minutes and a willingness to meet God right where you are.
This part of my routine may seem small, but it has become one of the ways I intentionally slow myself down. Most mornings, I sip Peach Energy Tea for a gentle boost, and on colder days or when I want something extra comforting, I reach for my favorite Mint Green Tea. Holding a warm mug gives my body a cue to settle and reminds me that this time is meant to be unhurried.
Pairing your quiet time with a drink you enjoy can quietly mark the moment and make it feel set apart. It doesn’t need to be elaborate. It’s simply one more way to be present with God instead of moving through your morning on autopilot.
