Evening Routine to Unwind After a Day the Work Day: A Faith-Fueled Rhythm for Rest

Evening Routine to Unwind After a Day the Work Day: A Faith-Fueled Rhythm for Rest
After a day full of client calls, content creation, and running a purpose-driven business, it can be hard to simply turn it all off. As Christian women who lead with our hearts, steward our time, and pour into others through our businesses, we often finish the day physically tired… but mentally still running.

That’s why I believe in the power of an intentional evening routine not just as a wellness habit, but as a sacred rhythm. One that allows us to transition from doing to being. From pouring out to being filled up again.

Evening routines are about more than skincare and sleep (though those matter too). They’re about creating space to unwind, reconnect with the Lord, and prepare our hearts for true rest. And with Pinterest trending topics like “evening routines” and “journaling” on the rise, there’s no better time to explore what a faith-fueled evening can look like.

Why Your Evening Routine Matters
The way you end your day often determines how you begin the next. If your evenings are filled with endless scrolling, unfinished tasks, or falling asleep in overwhelm, it’s no wonder you wake up feeling drained instead of refreshed.

But with a few intentional shifts, your evenings can become a place of:
  • Peace over pressure
  • Reflection instead of reaction
  • Surrender instead of striving
And that’s where this rhythm began for me.

My Faith-Filled Evening Routine (and How You Can Make It Your Own)
I’m a morning person through and through (my dog Lily actually trained me to be one - more on that in another post), but it’s my evenings that help me transition from business mode to peace mode.
Here’s what my wind-down looks like - and how you can borrow pieces to build your own.

1. Create a Transition Ritual
As soon as I’m ready to close out the day, I signal a shift. I shut my laptop, turn off work notifications, and light a candle. This small act tells my brain that the “doing” part of the day is done.
Some other ideas you can try:
  • Set a work cut-off time and stick to it
  • Play peaceful worship music
  • Write down any final to-do’s for tomorrow so you’re not carrying them in your mind
2. Brew a Calming Tea
There’s just something about a warm cup of tea that feels like an exhale. I keep a small collection of my favorites from The Art of Tea on hand and rotate depending on how I want to feel.
Here are three that I absolutely love:
  • Egyptian Chamomile – a gentle, soothing classic
  • Lavender Chamomile Rose Blend – perfect for relaxation with a soft floral twist
  • Sleep Tea – an earthy, grounding blend to prepare for deep rest
This step helps me slow down, warm up, and savor the quiet. And yes, I always drink it in my favorite cozy mug.

3. Gratitude + Prayer Journaling
One of the most powerful parts of my evening routine is journaling. Not only does it help me process the day, but it allows me to release any stress or pressure back to the Lord.
My evening journaling includes:
  • 3 things I’m grateful for from the day
  • A few lines of prayer or reflection
  • Sometimes, a brain dump of ideas or lingering thoughts
  • Scriptures or a quote from the book I’m reading
Lately, I’ve been journaling in one of my favorite faith-based journals from DaySpring and it’s made the process feel even more meaningful.
If you need help building a journaling habit, I have a guide you’ll love: Create Your Intentional Morning Routine (which also supports evening rhythms!)

This free guide is filled with faith-aligned practices that help you begin and end your day with clarity and purpose.

4. Reflect in the Word
I often read a short devotional or scripture passage before bed. Currently, I’m working through Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young.
A few verses I come back to often:

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8
Let the Word speak to your soul, not your worries.

5. Move Gently (Stretching or a Walk)
If I’ve been at my desk all day, I’ll take a few minutes to stretch or take a short walk outside. Nothing strenuous - just a few moments to move my body and shake off the day.
Movement isn’t just for fitness - it’s a form of stewardship. It reminds me that my body is a vessel, a temple, and that caring for it honors the calling I carry.

6. Surrender the Day in Prayer
Before heading to bed, I take one last moment to surrender it all back to God. What went well, what didn’t, what still feels unresolved—I lay it at His feet.
One simple prayer I love to say:
“Lord, thank you for walking with me today. I trust You with what’s unfinished. Let me rest in Your peace, and rise in Your strength.”

Customize Your Evening Flow
Not every evening will look the same - and that’s okay. Your routine doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be peaceful.
A few ways to adapt this rhythm:
  • Got littles at home? Try 15 minutes of quiet time after bedtime
  • In a busy season? Pick just one habit to implement this week
  • Night owl? Shift your “evening” routine to whenever you transition out of work
Remember: This is about restoring your soul, not performing another checklist.

Final Thoughts: Rest is Leadership
As women building faith-driven businesses, we often feel like we need to be “on” all the time. But your ability to lead, serve, and create is directly tied to how you rest.
When we pause, God pours.
When we slow down, we hear Him more clearly.
When we prioritize peace, we lead from overflow - not empty.
I invite you to make space for rest - not just for your body, but for your soul.

I’d Love to Hear From You
What’s one thing that helps you unwind after a long day of business or life?

Share your favorite evening habit or routine in the comments - I’d love to hear what brings you peace and helps you end the day with intention.
