5 Fall-Inspired Ways to Start Journaling with God
There’s something about fall that makes us slow down, reflect deeper, and crave more stillness with the Lord. Maybe it’s the crisp air that invites quiet mornings. Maybe it’s the cozy routines, blankets, tea, and soft music that make everything feel a little more sacred. Or maybe it’s the way autumn reminds us to let go of what’s no longer needed so something new can grow.

For me, journaling has always been one of the most powerful ways I connect with God, especially in seasons of transition. And fall, with its natural rhythm of reflection and reset, is the perfect time to start or return to this practice. If you’ve ever thought, “I want to journal, but I’m not sure how to start,” this post is for you. Let’s talk about 5 fall-inspired ways you can begin journaling with God this season and build a routine that truly fills you up.

1. Create a Cozy Journaling Corner That Draws You In
One of the biggest shifts in my journaling routine occurred when I stopped making it feel like a “should-do” task and turned it into a “want-to” moment. Every fall, I reset my space. I add some essential oils to my diffuser, steep a warm mug of my favorite tea from The Art of Tea, grab my softest blanket, and curl up with my favorite journal. My biggest tip is to just make it feel special for you.  Put your journal, Bible, and favorite pens in a basket near your chair. Keep a seasonal playlist ready. Set the tone and make your journaling space one you look forward to.

2. Use Fall-Themed Prompts to Invite God Into the Conversation
Journaling isn’t just about writing down your thoughts; it’s about inviting God into them. I like to think of it as a meeting with the Lord.  This season, try starting with one of these cozy, autumn journaling prompts:
  • “Lord, what do you want me to let go of this fall?”
  • “Where are You inviting me to slow down and savor?”
  • “What does fruitful leadership look like in this season of harvest?”
  • “What lies am I ready to release, and what truth do You want me to carry instead?”
  • “How can I make more room for Your presence in my daily routine?”

3. Let Journaling Be a Practice, Not a Performance
When I first started journaling, I felt pressure to do it right. To write long entries. To always have a revelation. To be deep and poetic. But God isn’t grading your grammar; He’s after your heart.
Some days I fill a page. Other days it’s a verse and a sentence. And that’s enough. This fall, give yourself permission to journal messy and small. Let it be a habit of checking in, listening, and realigning, without the pressure to be profound.

Quick Tips for Beginners to Start Journaling:
  1. Write a Bible verse
  2. Reflect on one phrase from it
  3. Ask God a question
  4. Sit in silence
  5. Write what you sense Him saying
4. Weave Journaling Into Your Morning Routine
One of the most transformational shifts in my business came when I began my day with God instead of my phone. Each morning, before emails or Social Media, I grab my tea, sit down with my journal, and start the day anchored instead of anxious.  I open my Bible and read a chapter or meditate on a verse or two. Then I move into journaling, where I begin with gratitude journaling, followed by prayer journaling. Depending on the devotional I’m walking through, I’ll sometimes include reflection prompts or questions to help me process what God is teaching me. I finish my morning routine with worship music and a slow walk, then move into a focused workday startup where I set priorities, check my calendar, and then I am ready to begin my work day.

5. Let God Speak Into Your Business Through Journaling
Journaling isn’t just a personal practice; it’s also a strategic one. Many of my biggest business breakthroughs came through journaling with God about questions like:

  • “What do You want me to create next?”
  • “What part of my business needs pruning?”
  • “How do You want to use my story this season?”
God is not just interested in your quiet time, He wants to be in your content, your offers, your strategy. Try this journaling prompt this week: “Lord, what is the next right step for me to take in my business?” You might be surprised what flows when you stop striving and start seeking.

Final Thoughts: You’re Invited to Journal with the Lord This Fall
If you’re craving clarity, peace, or a deeper connection with the Lord this fall, journaling might be your invitation. You don’t need to have the perfect notebook, the perfect words, or the perfect routine. You just need to show up, pen in hand, heart open. Because God is already there, waiting to speak, guide, and remind you that you’re not building your life or business alone. This fall, let journaling be your way back to stillness, back to God's truth, and back to the One who holds every season of your story.
