Building a Business with Celiac: Tips for Christian Women Entrepreneurs
Building a business as a Christian woman is a rewarding journey, but when you’re also managing an autoimmune disease like Celiac, the challenges can feel even more overwhelming. I understand this all too well. Before my diagnosis, I struggled with constant fatigue, brain fog, and stomach pain that made it difficult to concentrate on my work. The simplest tasks felt like climbing a mountain, and all I wanted to do was take a nap. It was a frustrating and exhausting experience that left me questioning how I could effectively run my business.

Everything changed when I received my Celiac diagnosis. Along with it, I discovered I was lactose intolerant. Determined to take control of my health, I dove headfirst into a strict gluten-free and dairy-free lifestyle. Within six weeks, I began to regain my energy and mental clarity. This was a turning point for me—not just in terms of my health, but also in how I approached my business. I learned through the Radiant Leadership Academy, a 16-week Biblical Leadership program for Christian Women in Business, that we can't pour from an empty cup. I realized that in order to serve others and run my business effectively, I needed to prioritize taking care of myself first.

My faith has been a cornerstone throughout this journey. Every morning, I start my day with quiet time spent with the Lord—reading my Bible, studying a devotional, or reflecting on a verse of the day. Gratitude and prayer journaling have become essential practices for me, helping me to stay grounded and connected to God's guidance. Verses like Proverbs 3:5-6, Zephaniah 3:17, and Philippians 4:6-7 have provided me with strength and comfort. Whether I'm prepping gluten-free meals in the kitchen or working in my home office, I seek the Lord's presence in all that I do.

Through this experience, I've developed strategies that help me stay focused and productive, even on days when my energy levels fluctuate. Time blocking and creating a power hour have been game-changers for my business. Knowing that I’ve accomplished something meaningful within that focused hour, whether it's work-related or personal, gives me a sense of purpose and achievement. These practices have helped me strike a balance between managing my health and running a successful business, and I’m excited to share more tips that have worked for me with you.

Prioritize Your Health First
Your health is your most valuable asset, especially when running a business. Make sure to prioritize your well-being by adhering strictly to your gluten-free diet and managing stress levels. Remember, taking care of your body is a form of stewardship, honoring the temple God has given you.

Practical Tips:
  • Meal Prep: Plan and prepare your meals ahead of time to avoid the temptation of convenience foods that might not be safe.
  • Rest and Recovery: Ensure you’re getting enough sleep and rest. Your body needs time to heal and rejuvenate, especially when managing an autoimmune condition.
  • Regular Check-ins: Schedule regular medical check-ups and monitor your health closely to stay ahead of any potential flare-ups.
Set Realistic Expectations and Boundaries
As someone managing an autoimmune condition, it’s essential to set realistic expectations for yourself and your business. You might not have the same energy levels as others, and that’s okay. It’s important to recognize your limits and establish boundaries that protect your health.

Practical Tips:
  • Time Blocking: Use time blocking to structure your workday in a way that accommodates your energy levels. Schedule your most demanding tasks during your peak energy times.
  • Say No When Necessary: Don’t be afraid to turn down opportunities or delegate tasks when your health requires it. Your well-being should always come first.

Embrace Flexibility In Your Schedule
One of the benefits of running your own business is the ability to create a flexible schedule. Embrace this flexibility by designing a workday that accommodates your health needs. Some days you may need more rest, and other days you might feel up for taking on more work. Listen to your body and adjust accordingly.

Practical Tips:
  • Flexible Hours: If possible, work in shorter, more focused bursts rather than long, continuous hours. This can help prevent burnout and reduce stress.
  • Remote Work: Consider incorporating remote work if your business allows it. Working in a comfortable and controlled environment can help you better manage your health.
Rely On Your Faith
Running a business with an autoimmune disease can be challenging, but you don’t have to do it alone. Lean on your faith and trust in God’s plan for your life and business. Pray for strength, guidance, and wisdom in your daily decisions, and allow your faith to be the foundation that keeps you grounded and resilient.

Practical Tips:
  • Daily Devotion: Start your day with prayer, Bible reading, or a devotional that encourages you and sets a positive tone for the day.
  • Prayer Journaling: Use prayer journaling as a way to express your fears, challenges, and hopes to God. It can be a powerful tool for finding peace and clarity in your journey.

Connect with a Supportive Community
Isolation can be a significant challenge when managing an autoimmune condition. Surround yourself with a supportive community that understands your struggles and encourages you in your business endeavors. Connecting with other Christian women in business who are also managing health challenges can provide invaluable support and camaraderie.

Practical Tips:
  • Join Online Communities: Look for Facebook groups or online communities specifically for Christian women in business with autoimmune conditions. • Seek Mentorship: Find a mentor who has experience balancing business and health challenges. Their insights and encouragement can be incredibly empowering.
  • Engage in Faith-Based Networking: Engage with faith-based networking groups that provide both spiritual and professional support. Our Christian Women in Business Networking group is a perfect place to build these connections and grow together in faith and business.
Practice Gratitude and Positivity
Living with Celiac disease can be challenging, but focusing on gratitude and maintaining a positive outlook can make a significant difference in your mindset and business. Count your blessings, celebrate small victories, and keep your eyes fixed on the bigger picture.

Practical Tips:
  • Gratitude Journal: Keep a gratitude journal where you write down three things you’re grateful for each day. This practice can shift your focus from what’s challenging to what’s uplifting.
  • Positive Affirmations: Incorporate positive affirmations into your daily routine to reinforce your faith and encourage a resilient mindset. I love the Biblical affirmations from the Radiant Leadership Academy inside Girl Power Alliance. I've also found some great prayer cards from The Daily Grace Co.
Building a business while managing Celiac disease as a Christian woman may come with unique challenges, but it’s also an opportunity to grow in faith, resilience, and purpose. By prioritizing your health, setting realistic expectations, embracing flexibility, leaning on your faith, connecting with a supportive community, and practicing gratitude, you can thrive in both your business and your personal life.

Remember, you are not alone in this journey. God is with you every step of the way, guiding and sustaining you. Keep trusting in His plan, and know that your business can be a powerful tool for His Kingdom, even as you navigate the complexities of living with an autoimmune condition.
